No orgy!

Today’s Downsizer-Dispatch . . .

New House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in planning a 100 hour legislative orgy.

Starting in about 10 days, Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to pass between 300 and 400 pages of legislation in the space of 100 just hours.

No one knows the specifics of this legislation. But we do know this . . .

100 hours will not provide Congress the time to read, understand, debate, and deliberate before rushing to a vote.

100 hours will not provide Downsize DC time to inform you of what this mass of legislation contains, or give you an opportunity to instruct your elected Representatives.

Have we gone from a Republican Congress that rubber-stamped everything George Bush wanted, to a Democratic Congress that rubber-stamps whatever its leaders want? We’re about to find out.

We are in danger. We don’t know a lot about this planned legislative orgy, but we do know that one bill in the mix contains provisions that would impose expensive burdens on grassroots groups like Downsize DC. Speaker Pelsoi clearly doesn’t want anyone to have the time to consider her proposals. What can we do?

One way to deal with this problem is to convince Congress to take the time to do its deliberative job. The Republicans never did, but they paid a big price for their irresponsibility, so maybe the Democrats can be shamed into doing the right thing.

Please tell your representatives to stop Speaker Pelosi’s legislative orgy. Tell Congress to slow down and deliberate. The Senate needs to hear this message too, so we’re including them in this campaign. You can send your message here. Please do it today so Congress has a stack of messages to give them pause when they come back from the Holidays.

And please make a year-end contribution so we can be prepared to fight-back hard when the new Congress convenes. You can do so here.

Thank you for being a DC Downsizer.
